banana Banana - The banana, originally from the tropics of Southeast Asia and now grown in over 107 countries, is the number one fruit in the world in terms of global sales. cherries Cherry - Cherries are very fragrant and sweet, ripening midsummer in North America. These tiny red fruits are related to apricots and plums. They contain anthocyanins which can reduce pain and inflammation.








coconuts Coconut - A staple of the tropical world, the coconut palm is harvested for oil, food, and coir, which is the tough, brown husk of the coconut shell. Almost every part of the coconut palm tree can be used by humans in some way. They spread easily from place to place by floating in the ocean and washing up on faraway shores.








cranberry Cranberry - Found primarily in North America, this berry is very high in Vitamin C and has a very sharp taste. Cranberry bushes like to grow in bogs with lots of moist soil and are pollinated by domestic honey bees. The state of Wisconsin is the top producer in the US. About 95% of what is produced goes into juices, and sauces, or is sweetened and dried. They are generally considered too sharp to be eaten raw but adding cranberry juice to your fruit smoothie recipe can really add some flavor.












dragon-fruit Dragon Fruit - Also called pitaya and strawberry pear, this cactus fruit has a sweet and delicate taste with a creamy pulp and a delicate aroma. It is grown in Central and South America and Mexico. The pitaya tree only blooms at night, showing fragrant large white flowers. The seeds can be eaten with the flesh and have a nutty taste.








durian Durian - The Durian is known as the King of Fruits and has a very strong smell and taste that can really turn some people off. It smells like sewage or skunk spray and is banned from hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia. With a hard, thorny outer skin, it is certainly an acquired taste.








fig Fig - Figs are small, dark, sweet and chewy and native to Southwest Asia. The fig is not the seed of the fig tree, but it's actually the flower. Fig leaves were made famous by Adam and Eve. It was one of the first plants cultivated by humans thousands of years ago before even wheat and barley. Figs have one of the highest sources of fiber and calcium in the plant world.








grapes Grape - Grown on vines throughout the world, grapes can be eaten raw, turned into juice, or left to ferment and become wine. Grapes come in green, red or yellow and some have seeds and some don't. Over 70% of the grapes produced in the world are used to make wine, with Italy topping the list of producers. Grapes contain high levels of resveratrol which has been shown to help fight cancer, and heart disease, among other health benefits. Adding grapes or grape juice to your fruit smoothie recipes can really give them a health boost.








grapefruit Grapefruit - Grapefruits come in a red or yellow variety and are very large and succulent. They were first bred in Barbados in the 18th century. The sour, tangy taste in the flesh beneath the peal can be tempered with a bit of sugar. The United States is the world's top producer of grapefruit. Grapefruit is known to interact with many drugs and medicines, enhancing their potency. Studies have also shown that grapefruit can help lower cholesterol.










guava Guava - This small oval fruit comes full of vitamin A and C and is very sweet. The guava is considered a superfruit and has 4 times the amount of vitamin C as an orange. It also contains Omega 3 and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and a high amount of dietary fiber. It produces over 500 seeds. Guavas are grown in Mexico, Central America, Florida, and Hawaii.








honeydew Honeydew Melon - The honeydew is a cousin of the muskmelon and has a thick, juicy fruit. It is found in supermarkets around the world and is called the Bailan melon in China. They are the sweetest of all the melon varieties and packed with vitamin C (53% of the rda). Put some honeydew in your fruit smoothie recipes to really sweeten them up.








jackfruit Jackfruit - These cousins of the guava are very popular in Asia and are native to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, southwest India and the Philippines. They can grow to be huge, up to 80 lbs or 36 kilos, and are the largest tree grown fruits in the world. The juicy pulp around the seeds tastes a bit like pineapple.








kiwi Kiwi - This hairy greenish, brown skinned fruit has deliciously sweet flesh. It is also known as the Chinese gooseberry and is a very rich source of Vitamin C. Kiwifruit has also been shown to have blood thinning properties similar to aspirin. Italy and New Zealand are the world's top 2 producers.








kumquat Kumquat - Native to China, the kumquat looks like little like an orange but is about the size of an olive, and grows in trees. They are used mostly for jellies and jams, and the Taiwanese use them for teas. They can be eaten raw with their rind. The center is salty and sour, and the skin or rind is sweet, which makes a nice contrast. Some Chinese will also boil Kumquats and use them to help sore throats.












lemon Lemon - A tart yellow citrus fruit that can be used for seasoning and to make lemonade. It is native to Asia and is an essential ingredient for many Mediterranean dishes. 1 lemon yields about 3 tablespoons of juice and it's easier to get the juice out by letting the lemon come to room temperature instead of trying right when they come out of the refrigerator. India is the world's top lemon producer.








limes Lime - The green cousin of the lemon, limes are rich in vitamin C. In the early days of the British Empire they were given to sailors to keep scurvy at bay. Hence the derogatory term "limey" used to refer to a British gent. India is the largest producer in the world. Adding a dash of lime juice to fruit smoothie recipes will really give them an extra kick.








loganberry Loganberry - This vitamin C packed berry is a hybrid of blackberries and raspberries. It was accidently created in 1883 in California by an American lawyer named James Harvey Logan. It is difficult to harvest because the bush is very thorny.








lychee Lychee - Grown in India, China, and Taiwan, the lychee or litchi fruit is starting to grow in popularity around the world. It comes from an evergreen tree, has a grape-like texture, and is packed with vitamin C. The lychee has been cultivated in China since 2,000 BC. They have 15% more polyphenols than grapes.








mango Mango - This sweet, tropical fruit is indigenous to India and is now grown worldwide. Mango is used in a wide variety of dishes including chutney, ice cream, smoothies, juices, pies, and chili sauce. Mango is super rich in nutrients and vitamins like vitamin A (25% of the recommended daily allowance), vitamin C (76% of rda), E (9% of rda), B6 (11%), and K (9%). It also has high amounts of potassium, copper, and 17 amino acids. About half of all of the tropical fruits produced worldwide are mangoes.

oranges Orange - Oranges originated from Southeast Asia and are known as the "Chinese apple" in many languages. There are many different types of oranges, including the navel orange, which gets its name from the belly-button like depression at one end, the blood orange, which is red, the Persian orange, which is bitter tasting, and the Valencia orange, which is used mainly for juice because it's so sweet.

California grows 65% of the peaches in the US. When I add peaches to my fruit smoothie recipes I almost always end up eating a couple before I blend them just because they taste so good and juicy.

pineapple Pineapple - This sweet tropical fruit grows from tall trees and has a spiny outer cover that must be cut away to get to the sweet interior. soursop Soursop (Guanabana) - This fruit is very common in Mexico, Central America, northern South America and the Caribbean. It's also grown in sub-Saharan African countries.
