4 Important Things to Know When Buying A Blender

Blender reviews can be very helpful when deciding which blender to purchase for your home. We've put together this Blender Buying Guide to help you make your decision.

As you read the blender reviews on this website and others, there are four important things that you need to know before making a purchase. Knowing this information will help you make an educated buying decision that results in a blender that you are truly happy with and will last you and your family for many years.

1. You Need to Know What Type of Blender Is Best for You

There are several types of blenders; a standard jar or countertop blender, a personal blender, and a handheld or immersion blender.

Standard Countertop Blender

The standard jar blender is what you see in most homes. It consists of a base unit that houses the motor, the blades which spin and chop the food, and the jar for the ingredients. We have more information on blender parts for countertop jar blenders if you need more detail. Jar blenders are ideal for families as they can blend large quantities of food and drink, and typically have strong engines that can handle thick, hard to blend ingredients, and they crush ice very well.

Personal Blender

A personal blender or single serve blender is smaller, quieter, and blends quantities meant for just one or two people. Most come with cups that also serve as the blender jar. You can then take those cups with you on the go, no cleaning involved. Most of the cups also come with travel lids and will fit into the cup holder in your car. Convenience is the major benefit of personal blenders.

Hand Blender

A hand blender or immersion or stick blender is a small, long device that you hold in your hand and stick in a pot or bowl to blend whatever ingredients you have inside. These are great for blending hot foods like soups, as well as blending large quantities of food or drink that simply won't fit into a standard jar blender. Immersion blenders take up very little space and clean up very easily. Many also come with attachments that are useful for specific tasks such as grinding spice or chopping foods.

To decide which type of blender is best for you, look at your needs and how you cook. Do you have a large family that likes to drink smoothies every day? Do you entertain a lot and have guests that you'll need to serve frozen margaritas to? Then a countertop jug blender would probably be best for you. Are you always on the go, rushing around and spending a lot of time in the car? Then if you want a healthy protein drink on your way to the gym or a breakfast smoothie on the way to the office, a personal blender would be the way to go. Do you like fixing big pots of soup? Do you move around the kitchen a lot with a variety of tasty dishes cooking that need blending? Then you'll need a hand blender. If you find yourself in several of these categories, then you could look at getting more than one type of blender for your kitchen. Consider it an investment that will save you time and money in the long run.

2. You Need to Know the Specifications or Features of the Blender

There are about 17 major features that we consider essential when looking at a kitchen blender. The following chart describes each. We include this chart in each of our blender reviews. Some factors may be more important to you, some less so, just be sure that when looking at blender reviews you match up each feature. This way you can be sure that you are comparing apples to apples.

Capacity This is how much liquid the blender jar will hold. Most jars have a measuring line in ounces, cups and liters.
Number of Speeds Speeds vary significantly among blenders, going from a single speed up to 10 or 11 speeds. It is a measure of how fast the chopping blades spin. Different speeds are better for different ingredients.
Jar Material Jars are made out of glass, plastic, or a polycarbonate material. Glass jars are solid, sturdy, and usually dishwasher safe, but can break if you drop them. Plastic is lighter but could crack under extreme temperatures. Polycarbonate material generally offers the best of both worlds, but is typically more expensive.
Power One of the most important features, power is measured in watts or horsepower and indicates how strong the engine is. A strong engine generates more power to the blades and can therefore blend ingredients quicker and easier. Blender engine power ranges from around 250 watts to over 1380 watts (2 horsepower). Generally the more powerful a blender is, the more expensive it is.
Dishwasher Safe Can you put the jar into the dishwasher without it cracking or scratching?
Dimensions The size of the blender in height, length, depth. This information helps you plan for storage of your blender.
Weight Most countertop jar blenders don't vary significantly in weight, ranging from 12 to 15 pounds. Personal and handheld blenders are much lighter, just a few pounds usually.
Warranty Another important feature. We've seen warranties range from 1 year to 7 years. Sometimes different warranties will apply for the engine and for the rest of the blender.
Colors Blenders come in a wide variety of colors, from pink to purple, to white, to black. Many have very creative names too, like buttercup and empire red. Be sure to check the blender color to make sure it matches your kitchen, especially if it's going to be sitting out on the countertop.
Ice Crusher Many blenders will come with a separate ice crusher setting that is stronger and is designed just to crush ice.
Pulse Function A pulse runs the motor for a couple seconds, then stops, then goes again. It is useful for blending thicker ingredients more evenly.
Digital Display Higher end blenders will often have a digital display that offers precision control of the blend times and speed.
Preprogrammed Settings Another feature on high end blenders where you can push one button for the item you are blending and then walk away while the blender does its magic, automatically setting the speed and pulse, and stopping when everything is blended properly.
Timer A nice feature that allows you to leave the blender running unsupervised and it just cuts off when the time runs out.
Food Processor Attachments Instead of buying a separate food processor, you can save money with an attachment to your blender. Several manufacturers include this with your blender.
Included Recipes A nice bonus to your blender purchase. Most manufacturers offer recipe books that feature many creative ideas on things you can make using your new blender.
Cord Storage Several models have the cord roll or wrap up under the blender for convenient storage. It saves space and looks good to not have the cord dangling out on your counter.

3. You Need to Indentify Any Weaknesses In The Blender

All of the major brands will tell you to buy their products, that they are the best on the market and beat all the other blenders hands down. What's the real story though? You have to look beyond the marketing hype into what actual owners of the product think. We have actual consumer submitted blender reviews on this site that help to shed the light on all major blender brands.

Have there been numerous reports of engine failure, leaks in the jar, instability, failure to blend ingredients properly? Has the blender worked great for a short time and then burned out just as the warranty expires? You can find out the answers to all of these questions in our consumer review section and in each of our detailed blender reviews for each brand and each model.

In addition to the reviews submitted by visitors to this site, we also conduct our own investigations. We read through hundreds of additional consumer blender reviews and summarize the best of these for each of our detailed reviews. We look at the key issues faced by blender owners, highlight the pros and cons and compile everything into an easy to read format. Our goal is to provide the best, most concise, and most pertinent information for you in an easy to read blender reviews format so that you can make an educated buying decision.

4. You Need to Know Where to Find the Best Deals

We scour the web looking for the best deals for you, saving you tons of time. Many of these deals can be found on amazon.com, which has hundreds of blenders for sale at very reasonable prices. Soon we'll be including a full list of other reputable on-line retailers that offer great deals on blenders. This information will be found at the end of each of our detailed blender reviews.

Prices on blenders range from about $20 (USD) for a basic personal blender to $400 or $500 for a top of the line model. Although it may be tempting to just go for the cheapest model, you need to look at your needs, using this Buyer's Guide as a start. In the long run, a more expensive model that saves you time in the kitchen, blends a wide variety of ingredients, and lasts many years would be a better buy and cheaper in the long run than a less expensive model.
